As I look back over the month of May, I can’t help but think about all of the tools, meals, hacks, etc. I used to get through one of the busiest months on the farm. This month was filled with many late nights due to planting, and as a farm wife, I had to step up and take care of pretty much everything on the home front while Jacob was busy getting the seed in the ground. But I also like to look back at the fun things we did in the few weeks leading up to the unofficial kickoff of summer. Coming back to our original series, here are my May 2022 favorites!
Springtime on the farm is a season of excitement, growth, hope, and faith in being able to plant our crops of corn and soybeans. With everything positive there are a few things that can sometimes just be plain downers. This spring has been a long one. Late April and early May were unfortunately cold and wet, which delayed our entry into the field to begin planting. We’ve dealt with a number of rain delays and equipment breakdowns needing new parts, and some days have honestly just had an overall feeling of defeat. But we keep our faith and continue forging ahead. And goodness when you see those little baby corn and soybean plants peeking through the soil, that faith just builds, and we know we are blessed to live this way of life!
My first monthly favorite pays tribute to those cold and rainy days we had early on in the month. I love a good pair of lounge pants (who doesn’t?), and thanks to my sister, I think I have discovered my all-time favorite pair! She gifted me a lounge outfit prior to her wedding for me to wear on the day of, so we all matched while getting ready. And let me tell you, I loved those pants so dang much, I went on my own to Target and bought another pair in a different color so I could have two! They are perfect to slip into after a long day of work, cuddling on the couch, or for cozy sleeping. The next item I want to share with you has saved me SO much time this month when it comes to field delivery meals for the planting crew. I’ve been very busy at work, preparing for several trips/conferences/events this summer, helping on the farm where I can, and trying to keep my house somewhat in order (haha) so I haven’t had a lot of time in the evenings to spend preparing a big meal. Typically, I plan out meals for the week, so the night before a planned meal I put whatever meat and liquid I’ll need for the recipe in the crockpot and put it in the fridge. Then in the morning when I leave, I put it in the crockpot warmer and turn it on. When I get home from work, the meat I need is already prepped, and it saves me a step! I’ve linked my favorite crockpot below, and I love it because of the timer feature. After so many designated hours, it turns to warm, so I don’t have to worry about something overcooking if I am running behind. I truly use my crockpot for so much – chicken breasts, beef roasts, hams, meatballs, sloppy joes, soups, chili, beans, etc. It really comes in handy!
I think I’ve admitted before how much of a coffee lover I am, and with the weather getting warmer, I really enjoy a good, iced coffee. And with the very late nights we’ve all been enduring during the planting season, caffeine is a necessity. But instead of making the trip through the Caribou Coffee drive thru (I still do it once in a while for a treat!), I’ve discovered my favorite iced coffee to enjoy at home. I load up a big 32 oz. tumbler, similar to this one here, with ice, Unsweetened Stok cold brew, and a splash of Vanilla Caramel creamer. It is delicious, refreshing, and has helped save me a little money! 😉
While we’ve been busy planting on the farm, May was also a busy month for me when it came to yard work and flowers! I truly enjoy gardening and I love seeing our yard come to life every spring with perennials and pops of color from flowers. Last year I actually worked at a garden center for some time and was introduced to my favorite watering can. It is two gallons, so it makes watering all of my flower pots a little easier. I actually take off the spout as well to give a direct stream to my plants. Might be kind of a silly product, but hey, it is a favorite of mine and I wanted to share it in case anyone is in need of a new watering can. I got my two at the local hardware store. 🙂
